The Diagnosis of Infertility

Before starting the infertility tests, you must be aware that these processes require responsibility and commitment. Your doctor will probably want to know your sexual habits and advise you accordingly. The necessary tests and trial period might take months.  One-third of the couples who suffer from infertility shows no cause for this condition. It is called Unknown Infertility. The evaluation period might be disturbing and expensive. Also, after all these tests and treatments, there is no guarantee for a pregnancy.


Infertility Tests For Men

A man who is not infertile is expected to produce enough healthy sperm and also ejaculate them. The tests which are conducted to men aims to understand the health of these processes.

  • General Physical Examination: This examination consists of examining the male genitals, medical history, previous diseases, the medication used and sexual habits.
  • Sperm Analysis: The most important test on male infertility is the sperm analysis. Your doctor might ask for a sperm sample many times. The sperm samples are supplied by a masturbation and inspected in a laboratory for amount, color, possible infections, sperm count, shape and activity of the sperm.
  • Hormone Tests: This examination consists of a blood test for examining testosterone level and other male hormones.
  • Ultrasound of Rectum and Scrotum: Your doctor might order an ultrasound in order to diagnose problems like Retrograde ejaculation.


Infertility Tests For Women

The ovaries of a woman who is not infertile are expected to release an egg regularly every month. The reproductive system also needs to allow egg and sperm to meet and become an embryo. In order to achieve that, the reproductive organs must be healthy and functional. Your doctor will probably want to know about your medical history, menstrual cycles and sexual habits following a general examination. This is called a gynecologic examination and additional necessary tests might be required.

  • The Ovulation Test: It is a blood test which aims to examine hormone levels and healthy ovulation.
  • Hysterosalpingography (HSG): This test aims to examine if the tubes are open, capable of its functions and finding any possible anomalies inside the cervical canal and uterus. Inefficient cervical openings, tuberculosis, adenomyosis myomas, and polyps can be diagnosed with HSG. During the HSG, a radio-opaque dye is injected in the uterus with the help of a cylindrical catheter which inserted thru the cervix. Any possible blockages or problems inside the uterus or fallopian tubes are trying to be identified simply by examining the movement of this dye.
  • Laparoscopy: Laparoscopy is a medical procedure which aims to examine abdominal internal organs using a special telescope thinner than a belly button thru small incisions. It is performed under general anesthesia. Laparoscopy provides an observation and surgical intervention thru small incisions approximately 3 to 5 millimeters using different surgical tools. Ovarian cysts, abdominal gestation, myomas, endometriosis can be easily treated and tubal procedures which increase the pregnancy chance can be done using laparoscopy.
  • Hysteroscopy: Hysteroscopy is a way to observe uterus. Using a tool called “Hysteroscope”, problems which occur in the uterus can be easily diagnosed and treated. It can be used for diagnostic purposes or a treatment process. For example, uterine adhesions, parts of the uterus and uterine fibroids can be removed using the hysteroscopy process. In occasions of abnormal bleeding, infertility, repeated miscarriages, adhesions, abnormal growth, hysteroscopy can be helpful for a diagnosis.
  • Hormone Tests: These tests aim to examine ovulation hormones, thyroid and hypophysis hormones (FSH - LH).
  • Ovaries Reserve Test: This test aims to determine potential activities of eggs after ovulation.
  • Genetic Tests: These tests aim to understand if there is a genetic problem causing infertility.
  • Pelvic Ultrasound: It aims to examine the Uterus and Fallopian tubes.
